How can you say above the bottom of the pan with a lid?

I have an old blue enamel roasting pan that has a lid, and that background that are both the same size. The main difference is that one has a lip that is overhanging the edge of the other part of the machine if it is on top, or if it is on the bottom, the other part of the roasting pan fits within it. The other difference is that one three of them slightly raised rectangular "rings" (or cuts from the top) and the other part of the pot has a very central slightly raised about an inch on each side.
