Is natural wood shavings with out anything added good or bad?

There is a wood shop near by and I asked for the left over wood shavings? there werent any chemicals added its just plain wood shavings.

Not a good idea to get wood shavings from a wood shop or mill. Even if there are bigger shavings there is going be sawdust mixed in along with other contaminates from the site. The sawdust will be a very fine particle that is dangerous to the respiratory tract of small animals. No one is going to be able to promise you that the shavings are free of other contaminates which might even include the oils from the machinery and dirt from the bottom of people’s shoes. All of this makes the wood bedding unsanitary for small animal use.

Also, there is no wood bedding that is safe for small animals except for Aspen.
