How do you protect the metallic paint without ruining the effect?

I used metallic acrylic paints, the kind Painting miniatures (citadel, workshop games, etc.) to paint a guitar effects pedal. I want to protect the paint as it is applied very thin layers with a dry brush technique, but the standard of clear acrylic spray (Krylon Crystal Clear) makes the effects of metal like sequins and kills the effect. What can I use to protect the paint without damaging the metal look? You could try to use a finish (matte) transparent layer. It might work. It protects and preserves still and shine to a matte finish.
