Flame Maple

Is this a red maple? (trees)?

Saw a small tree the other day here – gorgeous! – all the maple shaped (but smaller) leaves are flame red; but when I look up red maple (looks like it) it says it turns bright red only in the fall. Any idea what this tree is?

is it short and has pointy leaves and is more of a redishpurple than actually red if so i have one of these and it is a type of japinese maple. if so they are slow growing and will eventually get about 6 – 7 feet tall although that could take several decades ( they like shade)
